Russel B. Nye was born in Viola, Wisconsin, February 17, 1913. He received as A.B. from Oberlin College in 1934, an M.A. in 1935 and a Ph. D. in 1940 from the university of Wisconsin, an Litt. D. from Northern Michigan University in 1968 and an LL. D. from Ferris State College in 1969. Nye was a professor of English at Michigan State University from September 1, 1940 to July 1, 1979.
